About Dreamlands the Doc

If you believe the future is set in stone, why bother trying to change it? Why go to the trouble of fighting for or dreaming of anything better?

The climate is changing. The way we talk about this crisis needs to change too. What becomes possible when we allow ourselves to imagine more than one future for the places we call home? What futures become tangible when we let ourselves dream?

Project brief:

In this speculative eco feminist* documentary I will travel across Canada to interview women in and about the landscapes they call home.

I will ask subjects to imagine how they hope the landscapes they live in will look in the future given the crisis, and how they fear these landscapes will look in the future. I want to know: how does this place feel to you? Why do you love it? In what ways do you feel connected to it?

Subjects can be individuals, couples, or groups like families, friend groups, club-mates, couples, etc!

Why women?

In light of the climate crisis, the global majority has been disproportionately subjected to the whims of a few wealthy white men and their selfish decisions. The climate crisis exacerbates the ongoing violence of colonialism, racism, and misogyny, particularly impacting those already experiencing oppression. Rooted in a feminist/eco-feminist theoretical framework, I want to hear specifically from women. I believe that the way we care for the planet is beautiful. I also believe that womanhood and the care that stems from it is not tied to your biology, or whether you are a mother*. Womanhood is expansive and all the more beautiful for it.

The vision:

Using fabrication techniques and by creating miniature sets, I will create and bring to life the speculative environments described by the film’s subjects.

The final film will be a speculative documentary that combines interview footage, landscapes, hand-drawn animation, stop-motion animation, and fabrication to explore the climate crisis within a Canadian context from an unexpected perspective: the future.

*I align myself with a revamped form of eco feminism that disavows essentialism and works in opposition to overarching systems of colonialism, racism, and other means of oppression.
